Portable Trust Networks

Trust can travel, but the receiving place still decides what it means.

01

Big idea

Trust can travel, but the receiving place still decides what it means.

02

Picture

See the structure

A swimming badge carried from one pool to another, where the new lifeguard still checks local rules.

A two-page trust passport carries identity and continuity, evidence and provenance, context and scope, and constraints and state from an origin context to a receiving system without reducing trust to a universal score.
The Portable Trust Passport. Figure 1. Trust can travel safely only when the receiving system can inspect who earned it, how it was evidenced and recorded, where it applies, and which constraints, registry state, revocation, or decay conditions still govern it.
03

The simple version

Explain it like I’m ten

Mina earns a swimming badge at one pool. At summer camp, the lifeguard can inspect the badge instead of starting from nothing. But the camp still decides whether the badge is recent enough for its deep lake.

04

Tell it at dinner

A story worth remembering

Mina earns a swimming badge at one pool. At summer camp, the lifeguard can inspect the badge instead of starting from nothing. But the camp still decides whether the badge is recent enough for its deep lake.

Now make the same problem larger: replace the children and ordinary objects with people, organizations, AI agents, robots, records, and resources moving at machine speed. Portable Trust Networks let evidence of earned trust move across contexts while preserving local interpretation, scope, provenance, and governance. Portable trust reduces onboarding and verification friction across institutions without surrendering local risk policy.

Pause at the moment the small system could go wrong. That is the design question the paper keeps in view: not whether people or helpers are clever, but whether the surrounding structure preserves the intended meaning when action scales.

That is why the small story holds: trust can travel, but the receiving place still decides what it means.

05

Explain it to a CEO

Why leaders should care

Portable trust reduces onboarding and verification friction across institutions without surrendering local risk policy. Portable Trust Networks let evidence of earned trust move across contexts while preserving local interpretation, scope, provenance, and governance.

06

Explain it to an engineer

What the model means

Use verifiable, scoped trust assertions with issuer identity, context, evidence, freshness, privacy, and local policy mapping. Portability is not universal transitive trust or imported authority.

Talk hook

Trust becomes far more useful when it can travel without becoming blind faith.

Ask the room

What trusted history should a partner accept, and what must it verify locally?

The Canon is the source of truth.

WEB4-024 formalizes this structure: Portable Trust Networks let evidence of earned trust move across contexts while preserving local interpretation, scope, provenance, and governance. The ordinary-life story is an intuition aid, not a replacement definition; the canonical paper remains authoritative for scope, terminology, limitations, and argument.
